How to Get Free Music & News All the Time on Your iPad or iPhone

With iOS 8.4 or later on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you can listen to Apple Music Radio for free without an Apple Music membership. If you don't have an Apple Music membership there will be advertisements and you are limited to skipping up to six tracks per station every 60 minutes. Once you reach your skip limit, the Skip Forward control is dimmed for an hour. You will be able to see the number of remaining skips next to the Skip Forward button.

Get started

  • Tap your Music app icon
  • Select Radio
  • Choose a station

Stations are listed by genre. There are also channels for news and sports.

Whenever you see the More Options icon ( … ) you can:

  1. Tap it to share a song or station
  2. Go to the song in the iTunes Store
  3. Select it as a favorite which tells Apple Radio that you want more songs like that one

Best tip

You can leave the Music app and your selected station will continue to play as long as you don’t close the app. You can control the volume, skip songs, and more without going back to the app by using the bottom control panel on your device. To access this control panel swipe up with one finger from the bottom of your screen. See how to do all of this in the video tutorial. If you like, you can download a transcript of the tutorial at the bottom of the page.

Note: You can also listen to Apple Music Radio on your Mac or PC with iTunes 12.2 or later on your Mac or PC.

Here's a tutorial showing how you can use Apple's free Music Radio. An iPad with iOS 9 was used for this demonstration. Closed captioning is available. Click on the attachments link below to download the transcript.
