Every year there are millions of preventable health emergencies resulting from dangerous medication combinations, patients not taking medications as prescribed, and side effects related to known interactions. Annually, it had been estimated that 44,000 to 98,000 deaths occur from medication errors.
Medisafe, a leading personalized medication management platform, is tackling the problem of medication errors with a new feature on their popular app. This feature will alert users of possible drug-to-drug interactions that may cause unexpected side effects and/or alter the way the medications perform. The interactions feature also includes disclosures when medications have other lifestyle implications, such as interactions with specific foods or alcohol.
"Anytime a patient takes more than one medication, or mixes it with certain foods, beverages, or over-the-counter medicines, they are at risk of a drug interaction," stated Dr. Daniel Mosby of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. "With this feature, Medisafe will alert users of any known interactions, and information on when to talk with their healthcare provider, providing an extra layer of protection and peace of mind that their medications are working effectively and as prescribed."
The new drug interaction feature is initially available for iOS users. Medisafe will also soon be launching "Interaction Checker." This will allow users to look up the known interactions for any medication. Medisafe is free to download and use for iOS and Android. Premium upgrades are available that add unlimited family and friend profiles, access to health measurements, choices for voice reminders and more.
